Line 5 is an under construction line of the Milan Metro, Italy, that will connect the downtown Porta Garibaldi railway station with the north-eastern suburb, at the via Bignami-viale Testi intersection. The line will be built in several steps, with the first planned to open in 2012 and the fourth in 2015. Further extensions are planned. The line will operate using AnsaldoBreda Driverless Metro vehicles, the same of the Copenhagen Metro. The headway will be 75 seconds. [1][2]
The line is being built by the Metro 5 SpA consortium. The consortium signed the contract for construction of the Porta Garibaldi to San Siro section on 2 February 2011.[3] After opening the consortium will manage the line for 25 years.
Works on the first phase are already finished, and the test period is in progress. However, a flooding forced to postpone the opening to the end of 2012.[4]

The system will feature four-car articulated driverless trains from AnsaldoBreda.[3] Trains, designed by Giugiaro, will be 39 meters (128 ft) long, 2.65 meters (8 ft 8 in) wide.[7][8]
The systems are controlled by a fully automated computer system, located at the control and maintenance center.
